Montford Books & More opened in January, 2009, following the closure of the Reader’s Corner in 2008.
With an inventory of about 20,000 titles in various genres of books, CDs, DVDs, vinyl, audiobooks and music sheets, it's no wonder visitors get lost in one of the nooks, browsing or reading. And with a nod to the new, we offer free Wi-Fi, so we often find people writing away upstairs in our “sunroom,” with a cup of coffee and a breathtaking view of our beautiful mountains.
Owner Kay Manley, a life-long reader, thanks to a mother who “always had a book on her nightstand,” realized her dream of owning a bookstore where the ambience is welcoming and warm.
This bookstore with its classic feel “just spoke to me,” says Kay. “My hope is that people coming through the door will return again and again. We have heard folks mention a ‘good feeling’ and a ‘retreat-like atmosphere’ in the store. With so many avid readers living in the Asheville area, as well as visitors looking for a literary destination, we can offer good value and a pleasant experience for all.”

Keeping that feel while adding enhancements to add to customers’ enjoyment required imagination and elbow grease from friends and employees. Artwork by local artists now adorns the walls, suncatchers glisten in the mirror, and locally crafted gift items are offered for sale.
Returning customers often let us know they appreciate the changes with comments like:
With a knowledgeable and helpful staff, most visitors find something for themselves or for someone else.
We invite you to relax, recharge and renew. Bring a child and check out our children’s section. Bring a friend and share some book talk. Bring your laptop or journal, and write in a quiet corner.
We hear it every day: “I’m so glad this is a bookstore again.” We’re happy to be here too, as a bookstore — and more!
